First-Time Coach

Whether you're a professional person or a homemaker, coaching a boys or girls recreational baseball or softball team can be one of the most exciting and rewarding things you'll ever do.

There's something very special about watching a child, whether yours or someone else's, do something he or she has never done before.

The joy of seeing that smile across an entire face is truly priceless. You know how much work the child did just to perform that one thing, the tears, the frustration, the pain. You've spent dozens of hours working with the child. And finally, the day comes when he or she achieves the goal.

Priceless, simply priceless.

That's what being a coach is all about: helping the children in our community learn new things. Who among us doesn't get true joy out of watching our children grow?

Yes, being a coach requires active participation in the growth process. It requires the sacrifice of your time to ensure that other parents' children in the community have the opportunity to learn baseball or softball.

How Much Time?
The season runs from the end August to the end of October. Generally, you play 10 games and will have about 12 to 15 practices.

If you figure 2.5 hours for each activity, that's about 60 to 70 hours of your time over 12 weeks. If you kick in another 12 hours for team communications with parents (telephone, email, etc.), you will average about 7 hours a week coaching your son's or daughter's team.

The Key: Parent Involvement
At FMYSA we understand what 7 to 8 hours a week means. We understand the sacrifice. We understand because each of us commits that much time ourselves. But over the years, we've discovered the key to having a successful recreational program is to have an active coach and parent involvement.

No coach can do it all. You need the help of team parents. Most of our teams have between 2 to 4 Assistant Coaches and a Team Parent. The number and role depends on the coach.

If you want to get involved, contact the people listed below:

  • Head Coach - contact your child's Age Group Director.
  • Assistant Coach - Contact your child's Head Coach.
  • Team Parent - Contact your child's Head Coach
Remember, when you fill out your child's registration form, you can let us know that you want to become involved by checking the Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or Team Parent volunteer boxes located on the registration form.
But I Don't Know Any Parents To Help!
Your Age Group Director will help you assemble a team and help identify parents that have expressed interest in being an assistant coach or team parent.

Regardless of the number of parents the Director helps you identify, we have found that once your team is assembled, parents will volunteer to help you in practices and games. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK THEM!

So Where Do I Start?
To get started, you need to do the following:
  1. Review all the information on
    the right.
  2. Fill out a Coach Application.
  3. Contact your Age Group Director.
The easiest way to contact your Director is to come to the In-Person Registration session on August 11th.
