8U All Stars Myths vs. Facts

Myth: All-Star coaches choose their own rosters

Fact: Not true. There are three All-Star teams sanctioned for summer 2009 by FMYSA. We feel having a trusted assistant coach is as important as any player, so we offer an option to pick an assistant of his choice. All remaining roster spots are chosen based on the evaluations from the tryouts. The AS coaches do not evaluate players – that is done by some of the most respected coaches and baseball volunteers in our area from our Select Baseball Program. After the players are rated on day 1 of the tryouts, we cut the field down for a second tryout. After day 2, the scores are tallied again and the Premier coach must take the top players who scored the highest. Normally, we’ll give the coach two scratches. The other two AS coaches then alternate from the next 20 or so scores with a couple of scratches each.

Myth: Each AS team will stay together and form select 9U teams next fall.

Fact: Not true. New coaching applications will be accepted in the summer for Fall 2009 9U. New tryouts will be conducted. Some high quality coaches don’t want to lead coach pitch but are ready to make their contribution at kid pitch. Some AS coaches do go on to lead our select teams.

Myth: AS teams practice and play much more than recreational teams.

Fact: True. It also costs a lot more to play AS. Everything happens real fast, so if your player is chosen, get ready to help with planning tournaments, uniforms, hats, everything. And get out your fundraising efforts or your checkbook.

Myth: Having matching bat bags helps you play better.

Fact: Not true. It only costs more money. But that’s up to the team.

Myth: I am being pressured to join other non-FMYSA teams BEFORE the AS tryouts and if I don’t commit, I won’t have a place to play.

Fact: Not true. It happens most every year that a coach who is not sanctioned by our league will go on his own and pressure parents to make a decision prior to tryouts. It’s a free country and we respect but don’t encourage that trail. We suggest that the power of the league, using practice fields close to home, the insurance coverage for both players and coaches, the coaches certification program and background checks, the grievance system, and the rich baseball history of FMYSA are strong reasons to try your chances with an FMYSA AS team first. Why not try for the best first, then look at options.

Myth: I have been invited to join a “super team” outside of FMYSA. My son will now have a better chance of doing well by playing for a paid coach.

Fact: Young players don’t need paid coaches. They need a positive atmosphere to learn baseball and have fun. And they need coaches to can take pressure off of them, not put more on. That’s what we look for in our coaches.

Myth: If my son doesn’t make AS at 8U, he’ll be depressed.

Fact: Upset for a day or so? Maybe. Depressed? Hardly. The lesson here is that you don’t always get what you want. Sorry, that’s just the way it works.

Myth: The selection process is not perfect.

Fact: True. There is not an AS selection process on earth that is. But it is fair. We have tried several different ways over the past 10 years, and our current process of uninterested evaluators from older age groups is the best process we’ve found. We will continually look for ways to make the process better.

Myth: Some parents want their son to make AS more than their son wants to make it.

Fact: True. But please try not to be one.

Myth: Some parents are cutting deals under the table to be on an FMYSA All Star team.

Fact: Can’t happen since we went to our current selection format in 2005 of non-partisan coaches doing the evaluations. CAN happen with teams outside of FMYSA.

Myth: Once AS teams are picked, they will miss time from their current spring team.

Fact: Not true. AS coaches know that top priority is the players’ spring team’s practices and games through the end of the Town Championship tournament.

Myth: 8U All Stars is Select Baseball

Fact: Well, it is and it isn’t. In fact, it’s not real baseball at all until players pitch to other players. But it’s a great start toward the real thing and it’s incredibly fun to represent FMYSA in tournament play as an All Star.
